In October 2025, a Senedd by-election was held in Caerphilly, with the Labour Party loosing its seat to the Welsh nationalist left-leaning, Plaid Cymru who beat right-wing populist Reform UK party. Labour party has held the seat since devolution in Wales began in 1999.
